Happy National Watermelon Day!!

Happy National Watermelon Day!!

I’d have to say that watermelon is usually one of my favorite fruits to eat because it’s a lighter fruit and not acidic. I love acidic fruits, don’t get me wrong…but after eating them for so long, my mouth goes raw. I knew that National Watermelon Day was coming up do I decided to do some research on the benefits of eating it since I’m currently on a health/farmers market kick. Here’s what I found:

  1. Watermelon helps boost immunity. It has a high supply of vitamin C which helps to improve immune function such as shortening the duration of sickness and helps the body defend against cancer and heart disease.
  2. Helps reduce blood pressure due to the potassium intake. This helps to lower the risk of stroke and heart disease.
  3. Relieves muscle soreness. The high dosage of Vitamin C helps to protect cartilage and bones, while helping repair tendons and ligaments and even helps speed up the process of h ealing wounds and scar tissue.
  4. Prevents kidney stones. Watermelon is a natural diuretic which helps remove waste through urine production.
  5. Protects skin health with its antioxidants.
  6. Boosts vision since it’s a great supplier of beta carotene.
  7. Can help with weight loss. It’s extremely low in calories (only 46 per cup) because of its high water content and offers the important nutrients. It’s a great healthy snack option.
  8. Relieves acid reflux. Watermelon helps soothe the gastrointestinal tract and helps regulate pH levels, while lessening inflammation and acid production throughout the body.

I will definitely be incorporating more watermelon into my diet going forward. Now if only I could get the twins to enjoy it……

Update…..I let them try some this evening and CLEARLY….they love it. This makes Mama happy!
